Grid side energy storage
Grid side energy storage is an energy storage system built in the transmission and distribution grid. As a high-quality active and reactive power regulation power source in the grid, its main function is to effectively improve the safety level of the grid, achieve load matching of electrical energy in time and space, enhance the consumption capacity of renewable energy, and is of great significance in the backup of the grid system, alleviating the pressure of peak load power supply, and peak shaving and frequency regulation.
Grid side energy storage is carried out by power grid companies, with highly concentrated projects and a large scale of energy storage capacity. The power grid company itself has the strength and scale to support its energy storage business, and it also bears certain responsibilities. The significance of its energy storage projects cannot be calculated based on simple peak valley arbitrage. Moreover, the centralized and unified scheduling and execution of energy storage facilities by the power grid have better effects and greater impact, making energy storage more valuable.
In early 2018, the two power grid companies issued guidance on supporting the development of the energy storage industry, and the grid side energy storage planning became a focus of industry attention. State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) is promoting the addition of energy storage facilities in substations, especially in the multi station integration mode of substations, data centers, and energy storage power stations, to implement peak shaving of the power grid to alleviate summer congestion and uneven electricity load during different periods. Similarly, Southern Power Grid plans to build energy storage projects at boost line nodes.
